Clayarters:
I'm finishing the wood kiln I began a number of weeks ago. The initial
inspiration for the kiln was Troy's "Woodfired..." book. It is the Peg Udall
kiln designed by Ruggles/Rankin. I did additional research in Studio
Potter.
The arch is ready to be insulated. My experience with insulation is a
layer of kaowool and 3" to 4" of the following castable: Fireclay 2,
Alumina Hydrate 1, Portland Cement 1, Grog 1, and Sawdust 2.
My question concerns the insulation and coating formula as described in
the Studio Potter article "The Rock Creek Climbing Kiln" by
Ruggles/Rankin. They recommend two layers of kaowool and 3/8" coat
of the coating formula, Fine Sand 22, Fireclay 3, and Portland Cement 3,
over the arch. In the accompanying photo's it appears the sidewalls are
covered with the coating formula as well.
Has anyone used this technique? What kind of sand? How does the
coating formula adhere to the sidewall brick without flaking off or
cracking when expanding during firing? TIA.

This question has been asked before but nobody responded: If you put this
castable on top of the kaowool doesn't it compress the fiber and thereby
diminish its insulating value (esp. a 3" to 4" thick layer)?
