What size (horsepower) compressor is adequate for spraying a broad range
of glazes with a Paache air brush? Any particular compressors highly
recommended??

Edwin,
If it has a regulator then I would say go for anything with a 10 gal or
larger tank. If you plan to scale up to spray gun (as opposed to
airbrush) then go to something much larger with a two-cylender
compressor.
There is a traveling tool sale that comes around here that handles
Campbell-Hausfield factory rebuilt compressors at about half to
two-thirds the price of new. I have no complaints about mine. You might
look for Campbell-Hausfield or Ingersoll-Rand on the web and see if you
can get rebuilt direct.
Is your Paache a pitot type or does it have an internal needle valve? If
you get tired of cleaning a needle type airbrush, I suggest a pitot
type, available for $10-$15 US dollars in wood or hobby cats and stores.
The spray from these cheap ones isn't a proper "cone" like the ideal
high-priced models, but more like a double cone. Their advantage is that
no glaze material passes through the innards of the airbrush, but is
simply drawn up a pitot tube and dispersed by the airstream from the
brushes nozzle (like the old tin Flit guns our aunts used in their
veggie gardens).

Hi Edwin,
I use a 3/4 HP De Vilbis compressor to pump 70 or so lbs. of air into a
portable 10 gallon air tank. I rigged a regulator onto the air tank that
allows adjustment in the range needed by the airbrush. This way you don't
have to listen to the compressor all the time. I have thought about ways of
increasing the storage space maybe an old water heater tank or several
legnths of 4" PVC pipe "L"ed together and sealed airtight. It ain't fancy but
it works for me.

I use their little compressor, without a problem as long as the stuff
will flow. I can't spray some very very thick glazes with it. I
couldn't spray them with anything less than maybe 20000 psi anyway
though. I have a few glazes that the pot would sit on so they don't
count. I have used my compressor for I guess 15 or 20 years, so
the current ones might be worse or might be better. I bought my setup
for models and I use it for everything now a days.
