Hi all,
Finally Contact Magazine, which is a Canadian ceramics magazine, has a web
site and I thought you might want to visit. It can be found at
http://web.idirect.com/~contact
I hope you enjoy it.
Frank Tucker,in cold, wet Ontario where we are firing the ice covered wood
kiln tomorrow.

I thought that perhaps someone on Clayart would have a comment about the
new Contact magazine. What about the new cover, the great images of
Richard Selfridge, Carol Selfridge and Otto Heino in front of his Rolls
Royce??? My article Off With His Wee-wee- didn't it at least piss off
someone out there? god,I'll have to sharpen my wit.
Mel, e-mailed me a couple of days ago and said he was saving it for a good
read in the washroom. Surely he must be backed up by now. I recommend
coffee and aggressive wedging as a cure.
Sorry I haven't been visiting yawl in cyberspace but I've been packing.
We've moving our pottery after 21 years in the same location. I can't
believe the stuff we have collected. Imagine being David T for Texas
Hendley! Touched my last clay last week. won't have studio and kilns built
for another 2-3 months. boy, I'm going to be bitchy. should make for some
good Contact articles.
Till Niagara falls,

I totally agree with you Tony on the latest Contact issue. Barb Tipton is =
doing
some great work with this magazine and it's getting better with every issue.
Hats off to Barb as well as anybody who works on this magazine, it's looking
world class. I personally enjoyed Richard Selfridges experience with his =
wood
firing in Utah State, it gave me a few ideas to go towards. I also enjoyed =
the
Article on the Canadian Potters in China. Greg Payce came to North Mount
Pleasant Art Centre and gave a slide talk, as well, brought some chards, =
tools
and pots that were up to 700 years old. It was a great evening and just =
reading
the article and seeing those pots that night really gave me a good feeling =
about
the path I have chosen in life. I'm sure everyone knows what I am talking =
about.

I'm quite unimpressed with CONTACT as a whole. Being primarily a
functional potter who sells his wares to the general public and opposed to
a "ceramic artist" the magazine just doesn't appeal to me. Just one
opinion. I subscribed at NCECA but I won't renew.

I agree whole-heartedly with you Bob. I found the latest issue had
little for the urban functional potter but lots for those within the
sanctity/sanctuary of an educational facility or rural area. Read
erudite and fossil fuel. I too will not renew again.

Dear Peggy, Dannon, and Tony
I hope to read mine this weekend. I didn't see the article mentioned by
Tony. I began to think I missed it in the last issue. What a beautiful
issue this one is. I need time to sit down and enjoy it!
-it's been a busy week and weekend with needed firings to be done.

Bob: I am surprised to hear that you are unimpressed by Contact. I think
it's about to be the best mag going. I too walked around Necca and thought
I like to write and there are about 5 mags here I could choose to write
for. I decided to hitch my wagon to a rising star. The last Contact had
articles by me, Richard Selfridge and a trip to China by my friend Harlan
House. All three of us make pots for a living and they are functional
vessels. This issue had glaze and clay formulas, a kiln design. What's
missing??????
The greatest thing about the ceramic community is that you are always
allowed to contribute. Send Barb Tipton an article. If it makes the grade
it will be published . By the way I just sent her your comments. They will
sting her, but this is a lady that cares about this mag like her own child.

Kids can hurt sometimes.
Cheers,

Tony -
The new Contact "blew me away". I especially liked the "weenie" story and
look forward to reading more of your writings.

Awhile back we were talking about Wood-fired Kilns - the Contact article was
great and I appreciated you telling me about it in our recent exchange.

I bought a big load of hard bricks in Victoria recently and am now in a
position to build my own kiln. I have been visiting Graham Sheehan on
Gabriola Island. He has a beautiful little Boury Box down draft kiln and
has agreed to come to my place in March to build one with me. i can hardly
wait.

Keep up the good writing. Best regards,

Les Crimp in Nanoose Bay Vancouver Island.

Well... i guess i will have to side with the negative post ..... i got my
first issue...
i wasn't offended... just thought it wasn't that great for the money.....

Tony,
I just got my Contact and loved it and your article made me laugh out loud.
People say I'm easy to please, but thought you could use a little positive
input. I took it (zine) to school and almost lost it to the wood firers.
Best wishes,

What's Missing: Something for my soul. I simply wasn't spoken to by
anything I saw (admitedly, I didn't read much...there were no "hooks" for
me). I'm not usually a visual person, but something has to be present for
me to decide to read....there wasn't and I didn't.

Now Frank, how do you expect to gain new subscribers with that type of
attitude. It stands to reason that not everyone will find Contact to suit
their needs. But pearching is not an effective tool. Personally I am pleased
to see a magazine which focuses on Canadian potters. I also look foward to
reading Ceramic Monthly, Clay Times, Pottery Making, The Studio Potter and
Ceramic Review. The point is, it's all about what a person expects and I
just can't imagine that each and everyone one of these magazines will fill
each and every potter's requirements.

I am also a great fan of Contact magazine. I looked forward to receiving
each issue, more so than other ceramics magazines, because it was so well
written. There was always something in it to inspire me in a deeper way
than merely looking at pictures of good ceramics. I am very sad to see it
go, and I would re-subscribe in an instant if it could be resurrected.

Tony,
You brought back some memories with the mention of Contact. I used to
subscribe to it long ago, way before I knew about this list. I enjoyed
it because no other magazine was covering Canadian potters and it was
very nice to see what was happening up there! So I went down to the
studio and started looking for back copies, only found one so far, and
I know I had more than that. But the one I did find was from Winter
1996 - 97, No. 107. And there on pg. 24 was an article titled " Uncle
Jimmie and Me" , by Tony Clennell !! A wonderful story, what ever
happened to the mag? It was a good one! Mike Gordon
