cooling a studio in the summer

I was what method people use for cooling their studio in the summer.
There is not cross-ventilation in my studio and it has already begun to
really get hot in there in the afternoons. The cost of the cooling system
as well as not wanting it to stir up too much dust are concerns of mine.
Thanks, Meg

Meg,

My studio is a converted garage...
I have a couple of vents, located just above the foundation, which I close
up with heavy plastic in the winter, and open in the spring. When the
evening cools down, I place fans in front of them & they draw in the cool
air. I have a passive turbine on the roof, which draws off the heat. I've
mounted a trap door with a piano hinge & a rope pulley so I can open or
close the trap door from ground level.

I do have a portable swamp cooler which I use when I get really desperate!,
Otherwise, I just use fans. Someday, when I get rich I'll install a window
that opens!

My husband insulated the roof in the gar...I mean my studio this winter. It
seems to hold the cooler night air in longer. Otherwise I just use a fan.
Eventually (when we win the lottery) we'll install air conditioning. The
problem I have now is wasps. They seem to enjoy taunting me!!

I don't know where your studio is, but in Arizona we use what is known as
a "swamp" cooler (evaporative cooler). It works well as long as the air
is dry. It does not work if the air is humid.
