The Shelfords on tue 3 jun 97
Circling the subject a bit, I seem to remember that one of the potential
causes of the cracking was putting a weight on the rim to keep it from
lifting too much. In my experience, much of the warping seems to be from
the whole platter trying to lift from the center, not just the rim, causing
"spinners." Others may have better throwing or trimming techniques for
avoiding this in the first place. But I prevent it during the drying by
putting the platter on wood slats or newspaper, and placing plastic bags
loosely filled with dried beans in the bowl of the platter, filling the
cavity. They distribute weight evenly without marking the clay. Then
spread holey plastic over the lot for a few days. Dries more evenly that
way, and the rim lifts less when it can't pull the entire platter with it.
