crazing i think

A friend of mine purchased an expensive mug recently (within a month)
and called to ask me about cracks or crazing. It seems that the cup has
a circular crack around the base on the inside of the cup. I think that
is the only crack. She says it is barely noticeable but after drinking
tomato juice in it, it stains the crack so it is very visible. She has
never used it in a microwave. Do you think this is a typical reaction
from different shrinkage of pot and glaze or is this more structural?
She is concerned about using it. I have not seen the cup. Any advice
besides taking it back? lauras@epix.net

Its not crazing. Could be a dunt. Probably is a crack in the pot. Look on
the outside very carefully for a fine hairline crack to confirm. If you
find the crack on the outside, take it back for a replacement. Crazing
would most likely be a pattern of intersecting cracks.
