As a newly established credit card merchant I am paying $17/month rent for
my scanner.. the company (Central Bank) will sell it for $360... I hear
other merchants say they are buying used scanners for far less ..$75 or
there bouts.. I have called a few local banks around but get nowhere on
finding one.. can anyone recommend a good source for used scanners...
Now that I have seen the light. I would not even consider doing business
with being a credit card merchant.. it has dramatically increased my
sales..
Also any advice on cash registers would be appreciated... sources of,
features to look for, brand names to buy... which brand names to
avoid..etc...

Anyone who is considering purchasing a second-hand scanner, should be
aware that some of the models will not go past the year 1999. Just a
word of caution.

Join the Maine Merchants Assoc., they'll set you up with an electronic
terminal and printer through Key Bank. Key Bank allowed me to pay for
the two items over a two year period with no interest. I pay a $7.00
per month service fee and no charge per transaction other than the
normal percentage rate (BTW, bargain for a good rate).

Hi everyone..been following the credit card discussion with interest.(Is
that a pun?!) I have checked around here in northern Wisconsin and have
been unable to find a bank that would set me up for charge cards without a
fee- the lowest quote I got was $800! I'm amazed at how easy some people
have found it...so, i am wondering if the "Central Bank" is a place I might
contact , or do I need to find a local bank? It seems like some sort of
exclusive club around here! I don't do huge volumes of business at this
point, just a small shop, and I sell in alot of other galleries, so maybe
that's it? It is hard to get information about any of this so I'd
appreciate any available. thanks...

Joan-
Have you tried calling Discover Card, Novus Services, directly. They set me
up fast. Had choice to buy or rent the scanner, had to buy it (good
price).... but they set me up quite cheap and have had great service. All
electronic from their end, so it costs less than paper transactions. Try
calling them. (1800 347 2000)
