Hello!
I have the opportunity to aquire a Crusader Kiln, model #270, for a price of
350.00. Can anyone out there tell me whether or not that's a good deal?
It's 240V, 45Amp.
and has been repaired at least once......by someone who put an electric dryer
plug on it and doesn't understand why it keeps blowing the circuit
breakers....:) However, it IS currently in working order, or at least, all
the elements heat up. Thanks for any help that you can offer!

Any kiln depends a lot on the condition of the firebrick. I'm still
using my Crusader kiln(which I purchased used in 1975), but only for
bisque. If it has 6 controls, it can mean more elements or switches to
burn out than those with three. I believe dryer plugs may be rated for
less amperage than that stated on the manufacturer's plate. To avoid
fire danger from arcing at the plugend, I recommend having the kiln
hardwired inside a junction box. Crusaders are mostly good highfire
kilns, and sounds like a deal to me...

I used two 270 crusader kilns for 15-19 years in our shop. They are
great.-no problems outside of normal ware and tear!

Susan, I can't speak for the price of the Crusader kiln that you mentioned.
But I have owned the same Crusdader for over 20 years. Except for some rough
handling that busted the floor during my last move, it's operation has been
flawless. Be sure a knowledgable person checks the wiring. Good luck. Paula

I'm not sure of the price currently because we're not in the market. But
the price sounds really good. The brick and stainless alone are worth that
much.

If it's working, so much the better.

The cord COULD be OK--you'd need to check its rating and compare that with
what the kiln needs--most range cords couldn't handle 45 amps. Check with a
professional electrician would be my advice.

We had a Crusader for a time. We finally sold it when I argued we should
standardize on only one kind of kiln (makes keeping a parts inventory much
easier!). We picked L&L because, at the time, we had the Crusader, a
Paragon, and an L&L and the L&L was the easiest of the three when it came
to replacing elements. The Crusader was the worst. Paragon is also quite
easy. We now have three L&L's which I maintain. (As I recall, we were also
pushing the Crasader to cone 10, and it didn't really like that very much.
But with elements that are intended for that temp, we might have had better
luck.)

I believe I have 20 elements for Crusader kiln of this size. Stocked up
when we had extra money. They were replaced to years ago. Great kilns. We
had two in the studio.
