Veronica, the course (?) I attended was just a short
session with a lecturer at our local Technikon (tertiary
institution). She is actually a customer of ours and was
in our shop a couple of days before she intended to
show her third year students how silkscreening and the
making of decals is done. She invited me and another
customer of ours to come along and join the party. I
must say that I was pleasantly surprised at how simple it
all is. The professionally manufactured equipment is very
expensive here. I have access to a friend who does
silkscreening so that should not be a problem. He has
suggested that I buy my own consumables as that will
make it cheaper for me. I have an idea to go into
business with him to make custom transfers for potters.
We usually import transfers from the UK, and with our
exchange rate (R7 to R8 =3D 1 pound) they work out very
expensive.
I received a page of notes that the lecturer copied from another workshop, =
but I
see in Kenneth Clark's The Potter's Manual there is quite a nice section on
silkscreening, transfers and other print media. I am assuming that most =
potters
have easy access to that book. Others have posted on Clayart more =
comprehensive
reference works on transfers / decals. I tend to keep to the KISS principle,=
and
read the most simple of directions. That way I do not get confused with =
unwanted
information. Hope this helps Ralph in a lovely balmy PE SA
