I have two hair dryers clipped onto shelving near my wheel by flexible metal
holders (designed for welders) that I can bend over to the pot I am working
on, that I use continually during throwing large, thin, gravity-defying
pieces.
When I get to a place in the throwing where I know collapse is inevitable, I
position these hair dryers to blow on that portion of the pot, keep the wheel
spinning VERY slowly and let them stiffen up the pot (usually takes about 4-5
minutes.) Sometimes, I reposition them to inside and outside the pot at the
same time, being careful not to overdry when the wall is very thin.
As with all things, experience is the best teacher.
