Have I been living with a myth all these many years? Two rules I was given
within the co-operative workshop to which I belong were: DON'T put damp
pots in a kiln as it will be hard on the elements, and DON"T place pots on
top of the lid as the weight will be damaging to the lid.

I would agree with the first but not necessarily with the second. When I
was in full time production I used to feed my gas kiln by bisc firing in
a 4cu ft Olympic. I'd fill it and start firing with dried ware, and then
stack the next charge on the lid. Next day I'd repeat the process, and
glaze the first charge while it fired. That way I avoided having a
workshop full of bisc, which I always found daunting. The Kiln is still
going strong with the original lid. It was first purchased in March '79.
