Jim may have just hit the source of the educational problem right smack
on the head. The problem is when an student's goals conflict with the
program's. This only brings to a head the need for students to
accuratelly choose a program that is suited to their goals with
supporting faculty. Can it be so simple?

Again, I am re-posting this, as I am afraid it did not get through several
days ago when I was mysteriously off the list.

You hit it on the head, Karl. It's that simple, and yet it's amazing how
many people considering grad school do not do adequate research. They often
simply trust the recommendations of friends or former teachers who may not
be absolutely tuned in their needs and interests. All it takes is a few
phone calls to the school, both to the studio faculty and to the current
graduate students. The latter often provide the most valuable information,
but one must be sure to talk to a number of the grad students, because there
is always the chance of getting hooked up with a bad apple.
