I h know this has been addressed before
but I can't find my notes and any help will
be appreciated greatly. When you do reduction
(local) in an elec. kiln with Al foil wrapped
around the piece and the combustubles-how high
does one fire the kiln? Is it a reu regular
^6 glaze type firing or is it a lower cone ?
Thainks again!

Technically, this is not a reduction process, but rather a smoking process,
as in sawdust firing. We have had best luck in both electric and gas kilns
taking the kiln up to ^022. If the kiln goes up to ^018, the aluminum foil
sags and then melts. My students opened a kiln the other day that had gotten
a little too hot, and all of the aluminum foil was draped straight down off
of ever undulation in the work. It was very beautiful, but unfortunately,
when it gets that hot, oxygen is admitted and the combustibles turn to ash,
and the effects on the wares are minimal. As long as you do not go over
^021 or ^022 in the hottest part of the kiln you should be OK.
