I'm seriously considering moving my wheel to a spare bedroom. The problem
is, I'm not sure if this would be the best alternative. Currently it is
in the garage collecting dust, I thought if it was convenient and more
comfortable temperature wise I would use it more often. Has anyone tried
this, the room is carpeted and I'd have to haul the clay & water through
the house. Any help will be appreciated!!!

Hi,
I've done it,,,when i moved to VT my studio equipment came with
me,,however,,i didn't have a studio up here yet,,so a spare bedroom UPSTAIRS
(ya lugging all the clay up THERE ...ugh) became by studio. We had wood
floors..put large sheets of plastic down over them and then plywood on top of
that...we even put plastic half way up the walls....the room was small, but
big enough for a wheel and a table..and i had dowels in the walls for my
shelving...my electric kiln was downstairs..(ugh,,,more lugging)...i recycled
my clay upstairs,,had several buckets of clay scraps going at a time,,the
bathroom was just across the hall so my water was handy...but my Pugmill was
downstairs.....ugh... One thing that i would recommend is TRY to have
everything in the same room...(except your bisque) and if you really want to
YOU CAN DO IT......i'd take up the carpet though and be prepared for some
dust...i swore i'd always take my shoes off as i exited the room
but,,,,oh..is that the phone ringing?? run run run,,,darn ...forgot to take
my shoes off...be prepared for somewhat of a mess, but if you stay on top of
it EVERYDAY,,YOU CAN DO IT.....I did.
They say Pottery makes women stronger and men softer....i believe it.
Goodluck to you ...all things are possible, if you have the desire.
After three years of renovations our barn has become my studio and I moved in
Completely in May of this year....!

I have my studio in a room in my house and it is terrible. There is no way
you can keep clay dust out of your house. I have a cement floor too. I
would strongly suggest against using your wheel in a carpeted room in your
house. There is no way you could keep it clean. It would be a lot safer if
you used your wheel in your garage.

This may be of interest to many potters that don't like to make a mess.
Rubbermaid agricultural products makes a "trough" to water livestock. We
place our wheels on bricks (wheelhead barely below top of "trough") and
"trough" on top of cinder blocks (at a good throwing height for the
individual). This is great for stand-up throwing. All your scrap,
trimmings, etc. end up in the "trough". This system will not work for
sitting. Most of the potters in this area have started using these
"troughs". Brent wheels and old CI wheels will fit in a 100 gallon
"trough". New CI's and Pacifica's will require a 150 gallon "trough".
You can find them at most all agricultural product stores, small town
hard ware stores, or try calling Rubbermaid.

Every Ceramic Workroom I've been in had vinyl tiles or a cement floor so
it could be mopped. Although carrying clean water probably the slops
would prove a headache if spilled on the carpeting. Although vacuuming is
a possibility using Nilfisk Dust Collection System using a HEPA Filter
(it would run about $850.00) it might be more practical to remove the
carpeting. A major spill would probably be a permenent addition to your
workroom.
