electric kiln cone problems

Hi All!

My new (used) electric kiln does not fire to proper cone (rated cone 6
max).
When I insert a small cone 6 in the kiln sitter and fire, the wittness
cones indicate cone 5 just starting to bend. A small cone 7 in the kiln
sitter just gets a cone 6 wittness cone to start bending. I've gone
through the set-up procedure for the sitter and it is as supposed to be.

One other strange thing is that when I bisque at lower cones (i.e. cone
06) the wittness cones I set up get totally liquified! I can get by
adjusting the kiln sitter to fire hotter but what about the lower cones?
Anyone have some practical advise? Should I not even bother with kiln
sitters and just go by wittness cones? Any help appreciated as I'm
fairly new to this. Thanks in advance.

Dov:

Are you using large cones or small cones as your witness cones?
