electric seaweed firing
Hi all,
I've had trouble getting consistent colors from my seaweed, sawdust, Cu, Fe
"pseudo pit-firings" because I've been firing in an old run down gas kiln. I
just tried a method Russel Fouts mentioned in a previous thread (thanks to russe
and vince pitelka for all the terra sig and smoke firing ideas and info).
I wet my seaweed and sawdust in iron chloride or copper carbonate, let it dry,
then wrapped it up around my burnished pots with 2 layers of aluminum foil. The
wrapped pots were put into an electric kiln and fired to cone 06. The aluminum f
turned to powder but the pots came out beautifully "pit-fired". Next time I'll
use less copper and iron and fire to a lower temp but it certainly allows me to
concentrate on the salts I'm adding rather than trying to work on both firing
conditions and additives.
