Would anybody know how much an old Estrin wheel would be worth?

Don Sanami on mon 10 feb 97

Leon, It really depends upon the type and model all else being in decent
condition. Larry Estrins, kick wheel is probably worthfrom $50.00 to
$150. 0O These wheels usually have salvagable parts and can easily be
reconstructed. Estrin also made an iron kickwheel with a friction motor
drive.Althjough I did not care much for the wheel,(Me SHIMPO
alltheway)there are many of them around at a price of from $200.00 and

I sold mine (very used, in perfect working order) about 1988 for
$500. Put an ad in the paper and it sold immediately. Should be
worth that much or more now.

I have since replaced the motor because the shaft broke cost almost $300.00
and worth every penny. I use it 3-4 times a week for 3-4 hours each session.
good wheel but I like my shimpo better, someone left his here 10 years ago ...

I *happily* paid $175.00 for a 1970's vintage Estrin in 1992. An Estrin ad
in a '70's issue of Ceramics Monthly lists this wheel for $115.00.

Isn't it nice to know some equipment appreciates.

[Am I correct in imagining Estrin is a Canadian company which is no longer
in business?]

This has been my favorite wheel. I swore I would never part with it,
however, we are moving twice this year and the thought of hauling that old
Estrin was too much. I sold it to a friend for $150.00. It would have been
$200.00 to anyone else, but this friend invested a lot of time searching for
a caster to replace the worn wheel on the drive shaft of the motor.

I have a motorized one. It's heavy and quite diffitult to move or transport.
But it's great for throwing a large bowl. I got it used for $200 or
something. At that time, I did not know anything about the name Estrin. I
did not know much about wheels, either, for that matter, but it was
available, so I grabbed it. Later I did some reasearch and found that it was
originally sold by a company of the same name headquartered in Vancouver, BC,
Canada. I don't know what the situation is now. Anyway, the wheel came with
a lot of glazes and books. So this price I gave you above is an estimate
after deducting the value I placed on other items. I cannot trust my fading
memory.
It was some time ago.

Once the motor is disengaged, the large "flywheel" at the bottom gives me a
noise-free pleasure to work on the clay for some time. I can kick it for a
shorter but silent pleasure, as well. Maybe that's why I was attracted to
it. I could reverse the rotation for certain trimming tasks. And I
practiced throwing left handed, in a traditional kickwheel style. Did you
know that Japanese wheels turn the opposite way? I tried to steal a thunder
from them. It worked. And it was fun. Pragmatically, the wheel is quite
conveniet for forced drying or banding of larger pieces. (I always thougt
the noise of the motor was because the previous owner had put it there while
the original had none. Now I know better.) I modified the motor housing and
the small rubber wheel. It's still noisy. I like it, but I seldom use it.
For that matter, I seldom use all five wheels I own, or any of them. They
are all motorized. And I guess some of them are now semi-antique or
antiquated, for some time now. Some of them were useless when I boutht
them...hence the number of wheels I own. But, for some reason, I do not own
a Shimpo. I encountered a lot of Shimpos in my life, though. At any rate,
it looks like I progressively moved from one wheel to another. As my
throwing needs changed, my needs for trimming, and decorating also changed.
Estrin is a great wheel. Trust me on this. Estrin is unique. The $200 is
a steal, if it is not the only wheel you have. Why? I would not use it for
the pleasure of it, since I don't like the noise the motor generates. Also,
its weight does not let you move it about. Have you ever tried to throw
outdoors under a big magnolia tree shaded from the warm summer sun, while
listening to your favorite music? What a pleasure would that be! I haven't,
unfortunately. We have no such trees here. But the idea appeals to me. I
will create such a pleasure some day, for sure. But I may have to rush and
force dry it. And that negates the anticipated pleasure.

I beleive Estrin made several models of different designs. We had one
that was a large square thing with lots of iron pipe and angle iron and very
heavy. It had a wedging table on one side and the bench on the other. Large
iron disk with 1/2 hp electric motor friction drive. Could be used as kick
wheel. We paid 250 for it about 4 years ago. Sold for 200 a while back. Very
rugged wheel. Dont know whether Estrin still making wheels now. Think
unlikely as dont see any advertisement about them.

I paid $200 (Cdn) for mine, with no motor. That works out to about $150 US.
I built my own motor bracket, used an old table saw motor, and bought
a drive wheen from Estrin. I thinbk the drive wheel was about $60 Cdn.
