The first and best piece of advice is that charpness of whatever tool you
use, plus clay at true leather hard are the most imortant factors...I use
different tools for different effects, and my favorite tool looks like
the letter D..and I grab it by the round part..ths flat part is sharp,
and alas, I got the tool in Japan but had the local blacksmith make
copies..This tool I use by dragging it up the pot..When i want to go down
the sides of a pot, I sometimes use a sharp knife, and I always have the
pot sitting on a piece of wood with the edge of the pot over the wood a
bit..This is so I don't barl my khuckles on the table as I bring the
knife down..Dolan makes 2 good facetting tools, one with a flat edge,
and one with a rounded edge..their tools are really terrific..
My last piece of advice is that it takes practice to swirl around a
pot,but its great fun...also , you must promise not to use bad language
when you cut into a pot..all potters are genteel..Hope this helps...Elca
