Rice on wed 16 apr 97
Greetings:
I am still working on fast firing. It is very doable. I use 6pound fiber-
2x2"=4" thickness. I attach it to a metal grid structure originally
designed for hogs. Heh heh.
My first kiln is only 7-8 cubic feet. It sits on a brick floor with a
small brick perimeter. I use a standard raku weed burning type torch with
propane. I fire very fast on the way up and pack up the ports at final
peak. I then let the kiln sit until cool - about 8-10 hours. But firing
itself takes only about 2-21/4 hours. I heavily reduce from cone 08 until
about cone 5. Actually I use a cone 08 and a pyrometer to gauge when to
oxidize - about 2125f. You need to oxidize at the end anyway to kick the
kiln up to the 2200-2250 range. I know this is sketchy. I am short of funds
right now but will get more info and digital pics a web site somewhere as
soon as possible. Look for postings with subject including 'fast firing'.
Hope this helps a bit.
