Dear Sandy, and all Clayart readers
you wrote: " I have just seen the Olmec art exhibit at the National
Gallery" . I was wondering what National the National Gallert was in?

Regarding the Thor Heyerdahl, CUrrent: the Japan current runs North along
Japan and
then south down the west caost of the US then west from Southern
California (near Point Arguello and Point Conception) to Japan hence it's
name.

Regarding throwing direction and which way is forward a Japanese potter's
reply when asked why the Japanese potters throw backwards was you throw
backwards!

I teach my students from Japan the throw forward for Japan and all my
"western" students to throw with the wheel counter clockwise. I tell the
lefties that they have an advantage over the righties because their
dominant hand is inside the pot where they want it. IF after giving it a
good try I will let them throw clockwise. The important thing is that
they learn toi make good pots or if you prefer good ceramic art.
