Joyce,
We gotta talk...
In one my rare instances of going through clayart, I read..."I'm
thinking about using my small (12 cubic foot, 8 stacking
space) Geil fiber kiln for salt firings. Does anybody know if this will
ruin the kiln for reduction firings?" Your question made what little
hair I have stand straight on end!!
Yes, it will ruin your kiln, even though you might coat it with one the
high alumina coatings that I have seen talked about. Salt is highly
corrosive. Unless you plan to build a special kiln made from hard fire
brick, or at least insulating brick coated with a miracle materials such
as thwe ITC that I have read about, I would plan on doing salt at the
college. This actually provides you with more access than most people
have. We can fire this more in the fall, as long as we have people
willing to be responsible for the firing, as we did last time.
Normally, I would not be so discouraging, but in this case I would say
it is not worth your while to sacrifice your wonderful little Geil to
salt firing. Sometimes good advice is only a block away, Paul
