All this talk about clay plasticity has made me come to grips with
something I have known for a long time-we are going to need a filter press
to do our clay right.
Has anyone ever seen a Studio Potter issue that had the plans for a
vacuum-powered filter press. The vacuum pump causes a sheet metal side to
press against canvas bags which forces the water out of the canvas. It is
like a bellows in reverse. There were plans for a manifold for the press
that would keep water and slip from filling up the vacuum lines. The
article was about 3-4 years ago. Has anyone seen it? Can I get a copy from
any source? I will pay your expenses to copy and mail or fax or email or
whatever to get a copy of this plan. I remember just enough to be
dangerous.
Any other easy plans or ideas for a filter press would be welcome too.
Thanks in advance,

There is a great plain and layout for a vacuum filter press in
THE POTTERS ALTERNATIVE by Harry Davis Chilton Book Company

I have not used it but it look like it should work great.

Pat,
Sounds just like cider presses I have seen as a boy, canvas bags and
all. The exception is that the cider presses used a screw and wheel to
force the plate down on the bags. Maybe some of our colleagues from the
apple regions will comment.
