May 9-12.
=======================================================================
FireWorks '96, an International Ceramics Serminar will be held May 9 to
12 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This week we will be profiling our
Keynote Address speaker and two of Ontario's ceramic best, Steve
Heinemann and Ron Roy.
The Keynote Address will be presented by Petra von Morstein.
Petra von Morstein, is a professor of philosophy at the University of
Calgary and a philosophical counsellor in Calgary. In 1987 she formed
the Apeiron Society for the Practice of Philosophy (registered as a
non-profit society October 1987). The ASPP is a public forum for the
utilization of philosophical ideas and methods of thought in the context
of actual life problems. She worked frequently as "philosopher in
residence" at the Banff Centre.
Petra von Morstein has been working as a philosophical counsellor since
1988, initially under the sponsorship of the ASPP. She is now offering
this service in private practice.
She has published philosophical articles in academic and popular
journals, a book on philosophy of art, translations, and poetry. Her
major interests include philosophy of mind and philosophy of
psychoanalysis, philosophy of art, and the practice of philosophy in
everyday life.
Steve Heinemann was born in rural Ontario in 1957 of Hungarian parents,
Growing up in the countryside north of Toronto, he developed an early
affinity for the natural materials and processes. His creative interests
took hold in high school where he discovered clay and began to develop
his ceramics with the guidance of Klauss Dittmar, an Aurora high school
teacher with an enthusiasm for the medium. Also active in painting and
photography, Heinemann went on to study at Sheridan College School of
Craft and Design where ceramics was his major focus. After leaving
Sheridan, he pursued further schooling at the Kansas City Art Institute
and Alfred University, where he completed graduate work. Since his first
solo exhibition at the Ontario Crafts Council in 1982, Heinemann has
exhibited widely and his work is represented in numerous collections
nationally and internationally. While maintaining a studio north of
Toronto, he hastaught and lectured throughout Canada and the United
States.
In both 1988 and 1994, Heinemann received the Prix d'Excellence at the
National Biennial of Ceramics. He is also a two-time recipient of the
Merit Award at the annual Fletcher Challenge International Exhibition.
After finishing his formal education in ceramics at the Ontario College
of Art in 1963, Ron Roy, established his studio in Scarborough. From
this time until 1971 he was a studio potter and part time educator in
ceramics. During this period he participated in many shows, won numerous
awards, executed several architectural commissions, laid the foundation
for Rodaco Clay, and served as a volunteer in two major craft
organizations. He set up the studio, developed the curriculum and taught
at Centennial College continuing education department from 1967 to 1985.
1971 marked the incorporation of Rodaco Clay in response to the
community's need for well designed and quality processed clay. In June
1981 Rodaco was taken over by his partner and Ron returned to the
creative life of a studio potter and the task of re-establishing himself
in the more demanding discipline of porcelain. After a few group shows
he entered the "Perfect Setting" dinnerware show which opened at
Government House in Ottawa and won the special Award for Contemporary
Design.
Ron is currently concentrating on new work and commissions. He is
past-president of FUSION, The Ontario Clay and Glass Association. He is
a consultant to Rodaco Clay on a part time basis formulating clay and
maintaining quality control as well as assisting customers with glaze
problems. Two American potters suppliers use his expertise to help their
customers in solving clay and glaze related problems.
