To all you kiln "gurus" out there! Help!
A potter friend has come into possession of an
Olympic gas kiln which she thinks is probably 15
years old. The company is out of business (she
has called their number and learned that!)
According to the notebook that came along with
the kiln, it had been fired to C/10 on natural gas.
She has had to change it to propane and has tried
changing orifices, etc. but cannot get the heat above
l500 degrees. The pilot is a ring under the bottom
of the kiln and remains on during the firing.
In our small town the propane man and sheetmetal
people aren't too knowledgeable about kilns!
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Dear Jo:
I just changed my orifices and the information is quite fresh. Actually the
gas people know what they are doing but we (firerers) have to know our
requirements. In Olsen's kiln book he uses a 10,000 BTU/hr input capacity per
cubic foot of space. Just find out how many cubic feet your kiln is and do th
math. Tell your gas people how many BTU'S per hour you require and they can gi
you the correct orifice size (for propane) that you need. You might even have t
up from that. Cheers!

I called Olympic to verify their demise, and they are alive and well at
1-800-241-4400.
