Talbott on wed 12 mar 97
In reference to my last message on 3/10... I mentioned that I would say
something about the outcome of that glaze fire. Opened the kiln on Monday
afternoon (don't know why I was thinking Wed), having fired on Saturday..
starting Sat around 9 am and completing the firing Sun 12:30 am... Cone 9
1/2 Approx time 15 1/2 hours. The firing results were great. The colors
were bright and vivid, even the copper reds which are so unpredictable
which very red and rich. I think that the increased reduction (.68-.71)
and reduced firing time really increased the qualities of the colors. I
did go into oxidation for 15 min after cone 9 went flat.... I usually
reduce at around .5 increasing to .62-.66 on the oxy probe after reaching
900 C all the way to shut down (except for last 15 min of oxidation). On
shut down I close up everything- tight.... buner ports, damper in, peeps
in...until the kiln is below 200 C or there 'bout and then I start to open
things up gradually for a slow final cool-down...
---------------- from original message ---------------------
....Flames from reduction licking out from the spaces between the door and
the arch. Just like the good old days... Man.. what a relief to be
back in the groove again.... So I stayed around .68-.71 on the oxy probe
until ^9 was flat. I will open the kiln on Wed... can't wait to see...
Christmas in March....
Best Wishes... Marshall
