firing with sawdust blowers?

updated tue 30 apr 96

I know that saw mills often fire their furnaces with scrap sawdust that
is blown into and combusts in a pre-red heated fire box. I am sure that
some one has probably adapted this to kiln firing. Can anyone help me
out. I am waiting, sawdust in hand, for any pointers.

John- The book " The Energy Efficient Potter" has some space devoted to sawdust
firing. Also- your best resource may be a local brick manufacturer. Many brick
companies are using sawdust to fire their kilns.

A former colleague at MSU Billings was from Custer SD. He described the sawdust
burners as gravity or auger fed. Kilns in Spain also use sawdust fed burners.
You need a blower or a fairly safe means of avoiding spontaneous combustion.
Maybe feeding the sawdust through a long metal pipe would work..
