Thanks a bunch Samantha;
I will be sure to let mine dry completely, and you have just convinced me
to wrap the outside of mine with fiber for the first firing to hold the
heat and completely fire the shell. I will be firing mine with propane for
the first firing, and am hoping since I'm making it in two pieces, it
should allow for some separation and keep it from blowing up on me. Hoping
it will help with the cracking as well. I hope I won't have to fire with
the wire in. I used cloths under the paper mache so hopefully it should
just lift off the wire, one section at a time. What do you think about the
wrapping of fiber over the outside to see if the shell fires more
completely?
Sounds like you had a great time, unexpected twists and all. Don't you
find when your nerves have been stretched almost to the limits and your so
darn tired after firing you can't move, you've had a great firing, even if
you only have a couple of pieces to show for the effort. The second time
you'll know a whole bunch more.
Hopefully plugging away with the paper mache. Whew what a stink. Had no
idea paper mache mash would smell so bad. But trowelling beats the heck out
of adding thousands of stips. I can trowel the entire surface in about an
hour, and it takes most of the day to do the same with strips.
I'll be following any further posts and hope you get the kiln fired okay.
I'll let you know how I make out with mine. It's taking longer to dry the
paper mache than I expected so could be awhile before I get to the first
firing stage. Also have to wait for the weather man and unlike Hawaii,
we're still dealing with blinding snowstorms every other day. My Greatest
fear!!!! I'll have to work the day of summer!!!
Thanks for the post. Been waiting for it. Sylvia See Claresholm, Alta
