flat porcelain tile: mission impossible?

updated thu 31 oct 96

Hello. Anyone out there making porcelain tiles? I have a friend who needs a
few really flat tiles to be used as a backdrop for a freestanding sculpture.
They're being dried between two very flat pieces of plaster but still warp some
and even crack slightly along the edge (1/2 inch dimension). I'd love to hear
any suggestions as this is an exciting but extremely frustrating project. TIA

Try using no slip webbing for carpets to texture the backs of the tiles. We
have found this reduces warping dramatically.

Try drying the ties between two layers of sheetrock (2 foot square)
stacked no more than six layers high.

I've been told by someone who makes lots of them that tiles made by molding
from slip will not warp. Seems that going through liquid suspension doesn't
impose the kinds of stresses that the clay "remembers" from other forming
processes. Haven't tried it myself, but it might be worth a try.

What slip do they use? I have lower losses and no loss of small tiles
made from slip but my floor size still warp on occassion. I would love
to cut my losses on them.
