FOOT WEDGING
This is shown in some films and videos from other cultures. In "the Potters
of Hebron" they mound up the clay, the worker stands on the mound with one
foot while using the other foot to systematically stomp the edge down
concentrically from the edge to the center. These potters also do some
machine mixing and hand wedging, but foot mixing is one of the stages. I
imagine the clay could be mounded up and the process repeated several times.
I don't do foot wedging as I don't mind wire/cutting and slamming it
alternated with spiral wedging by hand. I use my feet is to flatten large
amounts of clay for a wall mural once in a while.

Reading this post reminded me of the World Clay Stomp held in Flagstaff a
few years ago. Clay people came from all over the world and brought small
amounts of "local" clay with them. The clay that the people brought was
ground, and added to a huge pile of clay. We all mixed it together with
our feet (a slippery process!) It was lot's of fun, but viewing the
videotape after we returned home produced horror in my heart - the cloud of
clay dust that hung over the area was gigantic. My friend is still
coughing.

Note: The clay was worked into panels and fired. They were installed as a
wall in the Peace Park, Nebraska.
