Mr. Kunio Uchida, my master teacher in Japan often said "decoration is
(usually) the result of covering bad form." "The worse the form, the more
decoration that is needed."

Form should be the first and fundemental element in designing pots..(yes i
said designing pots) decoration is the natural result of manipulating the
already designed form. Too often decoration becomes the end in itself...not
the result of totally designed craft. mel jacobson/minnesota..i believe
this to be the truth.

Mr. Uchida also said" we should often look at the wonderful Ming celedons of
the Chinese every so often to remind us of what simplicity and form can be
like." "Perfection"

i think snail has hit on the true meaning of form.

`it is the totality of an object`.

it is the gathering of all the elements of design
in a coordinated way.

mr. uchida insisted that i learn that form is
the know all, do all, completion of any
pot.

as i have repeated, a fancy glaze job cannot save
a badly designed pot.
just more visual chaos.

line in many ways is a 2d sense of enclosing
space. linear.

we still use line in a 3d function, but form
is its total.
mel
form is what tells you...`oh, shit, hit it with the hammer.`
