Greetings,
A question for others who make fountains.
Are there any solutions to the formation of algae in the water? I
have thought of adding a small amount of bleach, but am not sure what
this would do to the pump. vinegar?

Bob & Carol,
My Dad has been adding a little bleach to his outdoor fountain for years to
control algae growth, how much per gallons of water I'm not sure, but I know
it's diluted enough not to harm the birds... so far... no problems with his
pump...

Aquarium stores or nurseries that specialize in water/pond plants carry
products that deal with algae without hurting plants or fish. Greenhouse
supply stores sell algaecides, but the ones I have used in the greenhouse
all foam, which could be a problem in this case. There must be some for
swimming pools,too.

I am not a serious fountain maker. I''m in the midst of exploring with my
first but you may want to look into algaecides.... i know they use them for
waterbeds and such.... i don't know they're composition... good luck

I have problems in my fountains with algae also. I have used a mild
chlorine solution (from the hot tub chemicals). The problem is my CATS. I
suspect dogs would do the same. Fountains are a nifty recirculating water
bowl. I am worried about adding anything that will harm my pampered
felines. Chlorine seems safe...after all we drink chlorinated water from
city systems all the time. Algaecides would probably harm pets. Pamela

The best way to control algae in your fountain water is to visit the local
swimming pool dealer. The store will carry products to do this and can advise
you regarding local water. Jim Horvitz Rancho Mirage CA
