frits and giffen grips

I see all these references to frits in Clayart but have next to no
experience with them. How do you know which one to use???? I have
mixed up tests calling for frits, but if I wanted to adjust a recipe
using a frit, how do I choose?

Next question: I always thought that the Giffen Grip would be of no use
unless you throw all your pieces perfectly centered. My tall forms
always have a different center on the top than on the bottom. Karen
Gringhuis brought this up. Since so many of you wrote praising the
G.Grip, how do you deal with this??

Thanks.

Laura in Oregon, where my studio is finally finished and I've begun
making pots. Whew! what a long haul!

Although I trim only fairly of center pieces sometimes, I still have no
problem with the Giffen Grip. For those that trim odd shaped pieces I know
Giffen makes an attachement that lets the sliders move independantly. In
general you can trim just about any thrown shape with the giffen, but there
are exceptions.(large and very wide forms are difficult, although people
have found interesting ways to be creative with the giffen).

PS: If only my pieces were "perfectly centered"... :)

The Giffin Grip people do make some little doo-dads called flex-sliders
which can be tightened down onto the grip surface asymmetrically.
Pretty handy if you like to make asymmetrical work.
