fritted materials

1. Since one of the purposes in fritting is to render the toxic

non-toxic, one would assume that lead frit is therefore non-toxic. Would

that assumption be correct?

2. Assuming that said frit is nontoxic, does the copper oxide change

that?

3. Can you reformulate this glaze or suggest other ^6 redux glazes for

copper red?

Lisa,

Fritting a material does not make it non-toxic in the way you might think.

Fritted materials may be slightly soluble. and glazes made with fritted

materials,(lead), are not always safe.

Lead bisilcate is safer to handle than raw forms of lead, Like white or

red lead oxide but it still has a significant lead content. If used in a glaze,

the glaze may be susceptible to leaching if not properly formulated and fired.

The glaze would have to be tested for lead release and meet US standards

for lead release.

Some fritts are slightly soluble in thier powdered form and all lead

compounds should be treated with care and using proper protection

and disposal methods.
