Hello everyone...this message will be useful only to those attending the
NCECA conference next week, so if you're not coming...

I want to draw your attention to a very nice show that will be up and
running during the time the conference will be in town. It's called
Functional Clay 96, and is made up of the work of 16 studio potters from
around the country. These are folks who pay the bills through the
production and sale of their work--they are all "mid-career" types, and
represent a variety of techniques and temperatures. They all make excellent
pots.

The show is at the Shoestring Gallery, 1855 Monroe Avenue, in Rochester.
Phone is (716) 271-3886. Monroe is one of the main drags in town (Route 31)
and the gallery is about a 5-10 minute ride from the conference site at the
center of town. You will need a ride to get there, as it's not on the bus
route (we tried to get both on the bus route and the poster, but apparently
NCECA has bylaws which do not allow "commercial" galleries to enjoy these
priveleges). There will be flyers for the show at the main desk of the
conference hotel, and I'll be at the Clayart breakfast with some if anyone
is interested. It is definitely a worthwhile show if you like functional pots.

Included in the show are:

Linda Christianson, Lindstrom, MN Thrown, woodfired (salted too?) work
John Tilton, Alachua, Fl Porcelain, wondrous glazes (semi-matte
with
crystals, like lichens on rocks)
Steven Hill, Kansas City, MO Thrown and extruded, single fired,
great work.
Lisa Naples, Doylestown, PA Low fire, thrown and handbuilt.
Arthur Gould, Grass Valley, CA Cast teapots, nice use of the slip
mold technique.
Malcolm Davis, Tallmansville, WV "Extreme shino..."
Suze Lindsay, Penland, NC Thrown and handbuilt salt ware.
Patterned.
Michael Simon, Colbert, GA Thrown and handbuilt salt ware--nice
slip work.
Susan Filley, Mt. Pleasant, SC Delicate porcelains with great color
and pattern.
Jonathan Kaplan, Steamboat Springs, CO"Contemporary" slip cast ware.
Robert Briscoe, Harris, MN Thrown hi temp work using ash and slips.
Nick Joerling, Asheville, NC Thrown and altered work with "attitude".
Ellen Shankin, Floyd, VA Thrown and altered work--great harmony
between
form and function.
Stephen Fabrico, Bloomington, NY Textured, grooved porcelain.
Larry Clark, Sand Point, ID Raku vases.
Richard Aerni, Bloomfield, NY Single fired ash glazed work.
Don Sprague, Portland, OR was unable to participate due to problems caused
by the recent bad weather out there.

If anyone has any questions, please email me.

Thanks for your forbearance,

Richard
