we're going to buy a new kiln at cabrillo college (yahoo!) and i'd like
testimonials from those of you who use kilns institutionally. do you
have a kiln that works like a dream (or a nightmare)? we now have a
westcoast (poorly constructed but works okay) and an alpine. anybody
have a geil downdraft? how do you like it? if you have gotten an
alpine in the last ten years or so are you having problems with the
fire eyes? if i can call you for more info, please leave your phone
number. thanks a bunch.

John--build your own down-draft car kiln--100 times the kiln and at a
fraction of the price that you will pay for a commercially produced
kiln--Nils Lou wrote the "Art of Firing" my wife got the basic design
ideas from his book and we put an arched roof on vs a flat roof--and the
kiln is super---Make sure you build a CAR kiln--you will not regret
it...Marshall

> Added bonus-your students learn one of the most important lessons an
educational environment should provide. They may not have another chance
to build a kiln until they build their first one. For a student right
out of college-it can be frightening-and very expensive if it isn't
built properly. Losing pots (especially a whole kiln load) with your
first home made kiln is not only disheartening-but can be so financially
devastating that they may not recover their investment! With all the
kilns built by clayarters-I'm sure you can find a design that works for
your particular situation. We also have a modified MFT (sprung arch and
a few other minor modifications). Good kiln-very efficient-easy to
build.
Good luck

Well, I don't own one but it looks like Geil kilns don't cause pots to shrink.
I notice that the ads show Tom Coleman with a load of copper reds with the
tops of the pots right next to the bottom of the next higher shelf (toung in
cheek).
