We are about to participate in our first wholesale show and one major
question we have is about sending hundreds (thousands?) of dollars worth
of pots to people we don't know -- and hoping we get paid for them.
How do you increase the odds that after receiving your pots that they
will pay for them? I guess what I'm asking is: How do you insure that
the person you are dealing with is "legitimate" and honest?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

All shipments to new contacts are C.O.D. Then a net 30 is set up. Most
galleries understand this and aggree to this arrangement. Also have them
provide a credit reference from banks and other artist. Most buyers will
have copies of this with them at the show. Good Luck!

LeRoy:
My terms are:
1st 3 orders - payment in advance - orders sent COD.
Future orders are 50% in advance, balance 30 days after
COD delivery.
I've found legitimate galleries have no problem with these
terms. Close customers are welcome to come to the studio
and "pick pack and pay".
Set terms and stick to them - in others words act
the professional.

LeRoy,
What you do is ask for a pro forma or COD for the first order. For you,
all of your orders will be first orders and they will understand. Ask for
a minumum order of say 300 or more and send them. Be careful of start up
companies. Ultimately, you can't insure that you will get paind but 99% of
the time you will.

I politely tell them at first meeting that I'll be more than happy to open
an account for them, as soon as I check their references (bank and four
trade references). Assert that the first order is always C.O.D. while you
check the references, and if someone gets too upset about that, let them be
someone else's problem customer.

When I had to determine whether to sell to a wholesaler I got a list of
credit references - both vendors and artists. I then called them to make
sure the wholesaler paid their bills and if the people have a good working
relationship with them.
