Hi there Glaze Gurus....
Got a question about the relationship of ingredients in a glaze. I have two
very similar cone 6 recipes that I have used as a base glaze, both of which I
am sure are very familiar to you all. One recipe I got from CLAYART and
the other I picked up several years ago at school. The differences are
insignificant, but I wondered if there had been one glaze in existence and it go
altered with the use of Glaze analysis or why or how the changes came about.
Will the different glaze bases fire differently at different cones? Is one
formula better than the other? Did Recipe #2 come about just as a matter of
convenience in weighing out ingredients? In other words, these glazes are
similar but different. Why and what difference in results will occur?
Cone 6 Gloss Transparent Base
Recipe #1 Recipe #2
Gerstley Borate 50 50
EPK Kaolin 17.5 15
Flint 32.5 35
Just curious...

Dear Phyllis:
By upping the silica and lowering the kaolin they were probably looking to
make the glaze less matt. Adding more silica also helps to lower the
co-efficient of expansion to help with better glaze fit - less crazing.

June
