I have been using a three firing system (bisque, glaze and on-glaze)
in the production of decorated white glazed terracotta - looks like
majolica. I would like to raw glaze the white (zircon white fritted
commercial glaze) to reduce handling. All attempts to apply water based
glaze have been disappointing. Water weakens piece, glaze crawls or effects
colour. I feel a non-water based glaze may be the answer. Has anyone out
there any any experience of this idea or heard of anything similar being
used by potters, teaching institutions or industry. Peter C/- H.Forward.

Peter,
I have heard of (but not tried) the following which is a diluted gel of
aluminium stearate and napthenate in mineral turpentine.
Typically (I hear) 0.85%w/v aluminium stearate and 0.15%w/v aluminium
napthante in mineral turpentine. Heat the mixture on an electric hotplate at
70 - 100 degrees C until a transparent gel forms.
I suggest you contact Mr Phillip Robinson, 2 Glenmore Street, MUDGEE NSW
2850 as he is the source of the information I have given you here.
I could not answer a single additional question on the topic but would be
very interested to learn more. Please keep me informed.
Hope this is the start of something useful.
Denis
