One Day Course on Glaze Calculation Software-Insight
Taught by Ron Roy from Scarborough, Ontario

When: Sat. the 18th of May - 9AM to 12 noon and 1:30 to 4 PM

Where: In Calgary, Alberta Canada at The Alberta College of Art Computer Lab
where they have 20 Macintosh computers for us to use.

Cost: $30 ($10 for students)

The real message about this course is: Everyone will have a much better
idea of how glaze calculation software works and how the results can be
applied to clays and glazes.

I usually explain the different parts of the program -MDT, Ratio,
Expansion, percent, limit formulas, and the difference between recipe and
formula. I then start with a feldspar, apply limit formula and add
different materials till I have a "good" glaze.

About Ron Roy:

After finishing his formal education in ceramics at the Ontario
College of Art in 1963, Ron Roy, established his studio in Scarborough.
From this time until 1971 he was a studio potter and part time educator in
ceramics. During this period he participated in many shows, won numerous
awards, executed several architectural commissions, laid the foundation for
Rodaco Clay, and served as a volunteer in two major craft organizations. He
set up the studio, developed the curriculum and taught at Centennial
College continuing education department from 1967 to 1985.

1971 marked the incorporation of Rodaco Clay in response to the
community's need for well designed and quality processed clay. In June 1981
Rodaco was taken over by his partner and Ron returned to the creative life
of a studio potter and the task of reestablishing himself in the more
demanding discipline of porcelain. After a few group shows he entered the
"Perfect Setting" dinnerware show which opened at Government House in
Ottawa and won the special Award for Contemporary Design.

Ron is currently concentrating on new work and commissions. He is
past-president of FUSION, The Ontario Clay and Glass Association. He is a
consultant to Rodaco Clay on a part time basis formulating clay and
maintaining quality control as well as assisting customers with glaze
problems. Two American potters suppliers use his expertise to help their
customers in solving clay and glaze related problems.

Clay people world wide on the Internet on the CLAYART Conference
have been benefiting from his help. Ron is a presenter at the Edmonton
International Ceramics Seminar May 9-12, 1996 and has been a presenter at
NECEA in the United States.
