Hello everyone!

So I am going to Seattle at the end of the month for a convention. I will have
some time to hang out and see the sights. Can anyone suggest galleries to visit?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Of course, there are galleries to visit in Seattle, but you are about to
embark on a trip to an area that
has the most abundant preserves of nature you will likely ever see.
There is so much fertile ground for imagery and life on the trails which
number into eternity. Do not pass up a hike or two, do not! You won't
believe the beauty, and the freshness.
In 3 to 5 years, 3 to 5 million people are to embark on this area. Real
tears are in my eyes! Come see this splendid land before it is too late.
The earth in it's raw form, organic, green, and growing, waterfalls
alpine lakes, will do as much or more for your senses than going to
pioneer Square to the galleries.
There is a museum of Asian art, I'd go to, and the wooden boat museum
brings me a sense of art and beauty that is unexpected. The city by the
water at night is a sight to behold, and will forever be in your mind.
Mt Rainier at I think it is Sunrise (camp) is extrodinary, and you can
hike, and enjoy the flowers, and probably see bear and elk.
The aquarium is very nice, I like to sit and watch the fish swim all
around me. Seattle and area are just incredible, don't just stay in the
city tho! Sher

You're in luck! The annual Washington Potters' Association Show will be
opening May 22 at the NW Craft Center at Seattle Center. If you're in town
that night, (6-8PM) come on by.
Seattle Center is where the Space Needle is, and also at Seattle Center is
Pottery Northwest, which also has a gallery. PNW, you may recall, was just
given an award by American Crafts Council (as was its Director, Jean
Griffith) for service to the field of crafts.
Paul Lewin, in Seattle, where it has stopped raining for a few days.

Hi,
I just went to a gallery today called the Emerald City Gallery in Pioneer
Square. They had some really nice - large (3-4 feet) pit fired vessels.
They were in metal stands. They also had some of Roberta Laidmans dogs and
some Insaneasylm salt shakers from a potter friend where I live. I would
recommend stopping there.

I must add a side note (so people visiting will go back home and we won't
continue to become overcrowded), EVERYTHING you hear about the CONSTANT
RAIN is TRUE TRUE TRUE! >:) It's SOGGY and GREY and WET and COLD and
some people say depressing. YEs, yes, yes it is. :)

(but I love it dearly and wouldn't leave if you paid me)

I must, however, object, as a city girl and a strange person who sees art
in the oddest places. The city is one of the most intriguing places.
The nature areas are fine, fine indeed, but don't discount the brilliance
of the city, including the Pike Place Market, the Seattle Center, which
includes the Northwest Craft Center and Pottery Northwest. I forgot
about Seattle ASIAN Art Museum, a favorite of mine. Wonderful ancient
ceramics. Mmmm. SAM (Seattle Art Museum) is also a sight to behold.
Including theat constantly controversial (why, I don't know) Hammering
Man, our kinetically dynamic sculpture right outside SAM.

I said it in a private email, but it bears repeating...the bookstores,
and coffee shops, and little neighborhoods within the city are just as
fantastic and fascinating as the raw nature you find only after driving
distances. Fremont's "Waiting for the Interurban" sculpture is
wonderful, a quirky little installment for a quirky little neighborhood.
....and don't forget the troll under the Fremont Bridge, clutching a
Volkswagen Bug.

Anyways...don't discount the "art" you can find in the city! As much as
I am a nature girl, I'm just as much a city girl. Both the nature and
the city are worth your time....but if you can't get out of the city to
see the nature, don't be TOO disappointed, you'll have seen half the
wonder and beauty of the area...even the tall buildings can't block out
the water, mountains, and trees. Have fun!

(but for all those reading this, or anyone who read the rave reviews by
Time magazine....don't MOVE here, you wouldn't like the rain, and you
would HATE the drivers and traffic) ;)

Julie in Seattle
(where the weather now is desperately trying to prove me
wrong by acting completely out of the ordinary, pouring sunshine and 70
degree weather instead of the customary drizzle)

Celine,

Please be sure to check out the Washington Potter's Association Exhibit.
It opens May 22nd
at the Northwest Craft Center, Seattle Center. Just look for the "Space
Needle".

Enjoy.

Julie has a point, it is rainy out here, so so rainy! I forgot to
mention that, I am not being a very good Northwesterner not to point
that out. In fact anyone thinking of moving here, the 3 to 5 million,
reconsider...it is just too drizzly for your liking! We have to live
here!
Julie is right about the other things Seattle has to offer too! I had
just been out hiking, first hikes of spring, and just head over heels in
love with the texture of the trees, the thundering of the rivers which
are flowing now, and the fungi which grow everywhere, I forgot the
incredible city! You will have to decide, it is not enough time to see
ti all, I could live for eternity, and not see it all just in this
corner of Washington, too incredible. Do have a latte, several times a
day...and enjoy the dilemna of what to do, and what to see.

YES! That is the BEST place. My own personal favorite gallery, it often
displays tile work, amusing sculpture, glasswork, and even some
functional things. I enjoy it VERY much. I try to make my visits
frequent, but I have to hurry over, as I have NOT seen these pit fired
things!!!

One word of caution to anyone coming to Seattle, don't jay walk! Don't
put your foot off the curb if the light doesn't say walk! You will get a
ticket if you do! I have watched , and been ticketed by a policeman I
rerer to as Darth Vader, a bike cop, all dressed in black, no smile, no
eye contact, big black bike. Art people know the power of an image like
that....terrifying! I was ticketed for crossing a street that was
blocked off in Pioneer Square. Later I saw this , "cop," and he looked
like he was after prey the way he moved through the city. The ticket
cost me 35.00! I afterwards heard it is very common indeed to get
tickets for even looking like you might be going to go into the street.
I protested, but to no avail.
