With all this talk about pit firing, burnishing & reduction blackware, I was
wondering if someone had some insight into the "GunMetal Finish" that Popovi
Da was able to achieve along with Maria Martinez in the mid 60's to early
70's. Any literature I have describes "firing in the same manner as for
blackware, only a hotter and longer fire". I had also heard it had something
to do with oxides from the license plates used to protect the pots in the
firing. I've seen a couple of pieces with this finish and am amazed.

I've had success with 95% Alberta Slip and 5% black stain (Mason 6666 or 6600,
can't remember which.

I once bisqued fired a coil pot with newspaper on the inside that had been
used for support. I then glazed the inside with a transparent. Then fired in a
gas kiln till about 1100C and reduced in sawdust. To my delighted surprise
the inside had a beautiful gunmetal finish. I have a recipe for a dark gunmetal
glaze - cone 04, but has a frit as the major constituent. If anyone is intereste
please email me at fayralph@sprintlink.co.za

AMaco or Duncan or both have a low fire 04 gunmetal that is lead and food
safe(at last check). Depending on how many layers you put on it can look very
shiney to dull. I love using it for contrast on pieces. It's pretty inexpensive.
