I have a potter/painter mentor planning to visit Hawaii in November.
She will be in Kona and Hilo. Any suggestions for potteries, galleries
and studios to visit would be enthusiastically appreciated. Thank you.

There is a nice little studio/gallery in Kohala, I can't remember
the name, but it is near the King Kamehameha statue, on the left hand
side of the road as you head towards the overlook. sonya

This is for Joyce on her mentor visiting the Big Island. See the Waipio
Valley Artworks shop in Kukuihaele for nice raku, beautiful turned wood and
cool petroglyph T-shirts. Nice people, too. It's also just above the Waipio
Valley, a spectacular place. Also, the Volcano Art Center on the rim of the
Kilauea crater usually has very good pots and lots of other good handicrafts.

some thoughts...

The raku work you are referring to is made by Robert Joiner. He's
opened his own gallery which features his work and other ceramics, The
Rift Zone, in Hilo on Kamehameha Ave.

Nearby is a great little shop with nice ceramics, called Etsku.

Check out the Gallery of Great Things in Waimea. They have really
interesting work of all types.

Take a walk around the Hyatt. Must see collection of asian art all
throughout.

The Waipio Valley Artworks grosses the most $$, and the Volcano Art
Center comes in second.

And of course you can come by the ceramics lab at the community college
in Hilo anytime and introduce yourself to the professor, Gordon Lee, a
wonderful person (my best friend on campus). Personally I feel that to
meet him would be worth the trip! Most likely I'll be hanging around
there, if not in other art classes.

Plus so much more...you can email me for more info if you want.

Dear Clay Friends,

While clay is my passion, I work in the business world to pay the bills. A
headhunter is trying to convince me to take a job in Hawaii. I don't know all
the details, but it seems that her client is willing to be generous about the
terms.

Are there any Clayarters who live in Hawaii and could tell me a bit about
life there? I would be especially interested if you moved from the east coast
of the lower 48. I have heard of people who have moved to Hawaii and come
back to the lower 48 in less than a year because of "culture shock." I want
to learn more.

Please respond privately to me since I doubt that this would interest most
folks.

Thanks for your help.

I was hoping to correspond with potters in Hawaii prior to my April trip.
I was looking for recommendations for what islands to visit, sites, must
sees, pottery studios to visit etc. Any takers can email me privately so
as not to bog down the group.

Thanks
