There is a relatively new book out--a very comprehensive study of
Jomon pottery--I unfortunately don't have the book right at my desk at the
moment--that has the most detailed examination of rope textures I have
ever seen. The author states that most Jomon ware was textured with
different rope patterns and shows exactly how the ropes were woven,
and then has photographs of the pattern each type of weave makes
when impressed in clay. Very instructive and helpful.
