help with old kiln

updated sat 9 mar 02

John Eden on fri 2 may 97

I was asked to look at an old kiln in a small college in upstate VT to give
my opinion as to its usefulness. It is in good condition except that it
needs elements. Before I start running around, I thought I would ask you
folks if you know a supplier (for elements, switches, etc) for the
following kiln:

Craft Kiln
HT 2424
Serial # 4125
Supplied by the Stewart Clay Co. Inc.

Thanking you in advance,
Constant Albertson. (I am using my husband John's e-mail).

I am very new to ceramics (truly a newbe)- began to make pots about three months
ago after buying my wife a wheel. Now its becoming an obsession.

I have been essentially given (for about $80) a small Paragon AA-6b Cone 8 electric
kiln with a skutt controller. It is pretty old but appears to be decent shape
except for a portion of lost brick on the upper section. I can not find any info on
its operation. Does anyone know of where I can find some helpful info. It came with
furniture etc.

Thanks

Cool when this happens -- or hot, whatever's right.

I'd suggest talking with Paragon (http://www.paragonweb.com/index.cfm)

After months of patient watching of want ads, I snagged an 18 x 22 1986
Gare (made by Evenheat) kiln for $125 w/shelves & furniture but minus manual.

The Evenheat folks sent me an owner's manual for $12 with shipping. The
kiln had been fired once... not only that, the manual Evenheat sent was
brand new, not a photocopy!

Dave

But wait, there's more to the story... I was the second caller on the
kiln. The first caller beat me to the garage where it was being stored and
lost his opportunity to buy it when he tried to talk the seller into
letting it go for $90. ("It'll need new elements and switches.")

The seller said no, and the guy left rubber on the driveway as he angrily
tore off in his brand new Saab...

He must have spent his last $40,000 on his car...

I'm always pleased when someone finds an older kiln in mint
condition. There are still many out there, and they often need very
little work to get them firing again.

You can still get the manual for the Paragon A-series kilns. They
are not photocopies, either. We just printed more from the original
press plates, such is the demand for them. Please call 800-876-4328
to purchase a copy. If you specify the kiln model, you will also
get a wiring diagram. (Model # is on the data plate located on the
main switch box.)
