I am looking at a Skutt Electric Kiln and it comes with a regular kiln
sitter or a Kiln Master Electronic Controller. I have no experience with
this kind of thing. My husband says I am Technologically Challenged, so
is this thing hard to use? I think Paragon makes the same kind of a
thing. Any help you can give would be great. Thanks in advance.

Hello Barbara,
I have a Skutt 818 with the electronic control. I named her "AUTOMAGIC"
in other words, this kiln is so easy, all you do is push a few buttons
to program the firing mode and presto...I don't think you would be
technically challenged at all. Just take the time to read the manual
and some good books and you will amaze yourself and no doubt your
husband!! :)
I just got into electric firing, mostly used Geil Gas Kiln up until
August. One book to get is Richard Zakins book on Electric firing. It
is informative and interesting.

p.s. the kiln I have fires up to cone 10-nice little kiln, I would
highly recommend it.

I bought a Skutt kiln with the Kiln Master controller and an envirovent kiln
vent about a year ago, and am quite pleased. The controller is pretty easy to
use, and the documentation is straight forward. Simple firing to one cone is
extremely easy; programming a complex custom firing scheme, with ramping,
soaking, etc., is not too bad, either.

Good Luck.

I have two Skutts. One with the Kiln Master and one without. I love them
both but prefer the one without NOT because I dislike the Kiln Master
but for a specific glazing result I can't get from the Kiln Master (my
lack of experience, not Skutt's). The automatic controller is a severe
no-brainer (this coming from someone whose VCR would blink 12:00 were it
not for my wife). The instructions are extremely well written plus the
Skutt folks are very helpful if you have any problem at all. The
automatic controller also can do some VERY complicated stuff if you want
it to (ramp up, ramp cool downs, soaks, you name it) and you don't have
to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. Good luck. BTW, if you're
getting a new Skutt, I highly recommend Kickwheel Pottery Supply or
Bennett's (best prices on equipment, period.).

>Barbara, After 16 years with the same kiln I decided to buy new and also
go with the more techno challenged Skutt kiln. I fire to cone 6 and paint
with underglazes and a clear glaze. I found the kiln easy to program but
also found new problems I didn't expect....One, I normally would soak in the
old kiln and with the new I found that I overfired with the same soak time.
Next was a problem with my underglaze colors; same clay, same colors, same
glaze but the results were dead colors. After many firings and tests I
figured it was the atmosphere. I bought an envirovent and now my firings
have improved. (I also have taken to staggering the shelves). Good luck on
the new kiln, but I must say that I miss my old one.

I have had a Skutt Electronic controller for over a year and I
really like it. There are several programs in the book provided and all
cones are preprogrammed as well. If you can use a computer, you can use
the Skutt Electronic controller. When I bought my kiln someone suggested
to me that I buy the electronic controller separately so that I could use
it with several kilns. It seemed impossible then, but now I have four
kilns and I can use the electronic controller with each one.One thing that
I discovered was that when I had the controller mounted on the wall I had
to take it down each time to plug in another kiln.I had a special wire made
to hang out of the bottom of the controller and then i can plug in any kiln
without removing the controller from the wall.
With the electonic controller you can program the kiln for all
kinds of specialized firings as well. I find it very easy and very precise.

Good Luck
