The new kiln blues...

I decided yesterday to build a new raku kiln...

I made a fibre chamber 24" inside diameter 24" high..
My torch entry way is approx. 4" top flue approx 5" in diameter
Propane tank 20Lb, 8oz regulator.

I can only reach 1400" (After two hours)

Help Help Help,,,,

I used the same burner system to fire my Garbage can kiln
with no problems (1800F in 35 mins)

I need to get this baby working by monday night...

Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated..

My guess is that it is not getting enough air. Either adjust the burner
or enlarge the entry port. I had that problem after I moved my kiln and
restackied the bricks making the port too small.

Try putting some sort of stack on the baby. Just a piece of flue pipe
will work.

Is your torch allowing the entry of secondary air? You might need to pull
the torch out a little to pull in more secondary air to aid with combustion.

I'd suggest you check to see if you are firing in oxidation or reduction
before you make any changes...check the flame at the exhaust port...if
it's orange you need to enlarge the exhaust opening...if flame is
nonexistant, partialy cover the exhaust opening with a piece of kaowool
or brick.
The rate of temp rise is very sensitive to the two openings in the can. If
enlarging the lid opening does't do the trick, enlarge the burner opening as
well. .LRH

John,

Did you calculate the btu's necessary for your new kiln? Can your
burner deliver these? You have probably increased the cubic feet over the
garbage can kiln and the burner just can't handle it. I would suggest a
second burner and probably increasing the size of your propane tank.
Branfman's "Raku: A Practical Approach" book has an easy formula to figure
your btu requirements in relation to size as well as kiln material,ie.
brick and fiber. I recommend a look, you may be surprised at how rapidly
you can expand cubic feet and how many more btu's are then required. Good
luck-

John, I had a similar problem. My kiln is approx. the same size as yours. I
changed from a small tank to a 50 gal tank and was getting nowhere. Thanks to
help from ClayArters I enlarged my flue opening. I adjust it with a brokenkiln
shelf. My opening is probably two inches bigger than my burner port. I also
pull the burner out of port about l l/2" after 15 min. I am now firing up to
1800-1850 in 25-30 min ,sometimes less depending on the wind. My colors are a
lot better too. Hope this helps! Elaine, on Camano Island.

JB,

There are many variables involved in these kind of problems. Believe it or
not, too many to list. I can solve your problem, maybe by tonight, maybe not,
but I would need you to call me so I can ask you some questions. Feel free to
call.

I don't know if raku kilns can be compared to gas kilns. From my reading I
believe that the exit flue must be the same area as the entrance flue. Try
it, it might work.

Probably just backing the burner back 3" or so from the burner port will
solve your problem..You could have been firing in reduction and allowing
more oxygen to combine with the propane will put you into oxidation and
your temps should climb..let us know--Marshall
