Hello all !
I am trying to make my own honey-dippers instead of buying the ones made of
wood, sold by the suppliers.
Does anyone know how to throw them on the wheel ??
Any help will be greatly appreciated, especially if it gets here before
Rosh-Hashanna,when all my customers want honey jars w/honey dippers !!
THANKS

I have always made my own honey dippers....not because I am that clever,
but because I am that cheap! I take a ball of clay, roll it in my hands to
make it somewhat long, then take a wood rib edge and spiral it right down
the clay from top to bottom. Then I push a dowel down about 3/4's of the
way through the center and bore it out slightly. I for this piece and a
smaller round top piece, also with a dowell hole in it and then glue both
pieces onto a wood dowel. They work great, are much sturdier then ones
I've seen that are all clay, and simple to make. My customers seem to
appreciate the "handmade" appeal of these over the wood mass produced
sticks. Good luck.

Naama,
You've got a busy week ahead of you if you want to have these ready
before Yom Tov! You could just roll a coil and attach a ball of
clay to one end (or better yet just make a ball out of one end).
Use whatever shape you like to slow down the flow of honey. I
don't think I'd bother with grooves in the ball because they'll
probably fill with glaze anyway.

Naama,
I've never attempted to throw a honey dipper, but I've done ladles on the
wheel. Problem with them is that I'm always afraid of breaking them--the
handles are plenty delicate. Anyway, throw the honey-dipper head just as
you would a knob. Use a wooden tool to make the grooves. I suggest throwing
it off the hump, cutting it off, and so on. After your dipper heads are
leather hard, make handle blanks, attach to the heads, and pull round
handles. If you want to finish the ends with a little knob, wait until the
handles stiffen to add the knob. You'll need to hang the dippers, head-up,
with handles dangling until they reach, I would think, the bone-dry state.
Then, when you glaze fire, you'll have to balance them on stilts, of
course. Don't try to make them as thin as the wooden dippers--wood has much
greater tensile strength than ceramic.
Hope it works well for you,

Naama, Throwing honey dippers seems to me like an excercise in frustration
when a simple,two-piece bisqued,press-mold should do the trick, using a
wooden dipper as the plug. Shalom, Don

For an all-ceramic honey dipper, I pull a handle and form a loop on the
underside of the lid.
After you have attached the clay to the center of the underside of the lid
and pulled the handle, form the loop by re-attaching the loose end back into
the same center spot. I also give the lid a twist (not quite a whole
revolution) so that the small loop hangs down into the pot from the twist.
I hope you can visualize this from my description- because, they work well,
and the customers love them because they don't mold, and the jar is
completely covered when not in use.
