Hi guys - OK, I got engaged this weekend and I'm toying with the idea of
making tiny vases for the table gifts (150 - 200) Yeah, I'm crazy, but I
want to do something special. Since the wedding will be in December I'm
thinking of a nice hunter green glaze - does anyone have a recipe for one -
glossy at ^6 oxidation, most likely on a white stoneware body. Thanks!!
I'd better get throwing, -Annie

Try these:

Emerald Green

Gerstly Borate 49
EPK 19
Flint 32
Soda Ash 2
Chrome Ox 2
Cobalt Ox 1

Blue Green

Gerstley Borate 30
Flint 30
Dolomite 20
EPK 20

Chrome Ox 2.5
Cobalt Ox .3

Forrest Green

Dolomite 19
Whiting 3
Neph Syenite 35
Ball Clay 24
Silica 19
Chrome Ox 2
Cobalt Carb. 1

I have used all of these, The last more than the others. It is a satin
glaze. The others are more glossy. All are cone 6. Hope they work.
Let me know if you like one and your results.

Here's a cone 6 ox. recipe that is very pretty, maybe it will help:
silica 8
neph sy 46
spodumene 10
kaolin 12
dolomite 10
gerstley bor.10
zinc 4
add:
copper carb. 2.5
If I remember correctly, the credit for this glaze goes to R. Zakin of
"Electric Kiln Ceramics" (latest volume).

Hi!
I have been an avid researcher of cone 6 clayart glazes for the past few
years. I live in Vermont, surroundedby evergreens and inspired by their dark
green colors, particularly as contrasted by the snowy landscape. I have been
searching for such a rich, deep green color and have had little
success...generally finding metallic greens that seem to end up as muddy and
murky dull colors. I would love to find a hunter'evergreen color that has a
gloss or semi-gloss surface cone 6. Any ideas, thanks, Joanna

Joanna,
Have you considered Mason (or other) stains? Those people have gone to a lot
of trouble to come up with some interesting oxide blends. And you can always
do further blending to suit your taste. (maybe this comes to mind because I
just finished paining the bathroom walls....I ended up blending the too-green
paint that I orignally selected with some white and that's what is now drying
as I write.)

This glaze - if it is glossy - looks like it might be a stable glass at
cone 6. It is oversupplied with MgO according to the limits I use but it
does have enough alumina and silica - It's a bit short of silica at cone
10.

Be aware there are hazards associalted with chrome - both in fuming during
firing and when leached into food. Either have it tested for chrome release
or don't use it where it can be in contact with food.

This glaze is seriously short of alumina and silica - there is a very good
chance it is not a durable glaze. Add to that the suspected problems with
chrome - I would not use it on any food bearing surfaces. It has a low
calculated expansion and should be tested for fit problems.
