I'm looking for a new earthenware body. Have tried PLAINSMAN L210, L213 and
Terra Cota without satisfaction. I have been mixing my own since almost 4
years - very nice red body. The extra work, energy, time and money ( Red
Art clay is terribly expensive in this part of the world) dosn't allow me
to continue mixing my own clay. Any suggestion from potters living in
Western Canada? How is the newest PLAINSMAN - Majolica clay? Is there a
good Laguna earthenware clay as my local supplier now seems willing to get
that clay? I want a rich red body, for throwing functional ware. Also, I
would appreciate a glaze recipe that could go with this new clay for good
functional ware, to get me started. All your suggestions would be greatly
apprciated.

My experience with Plainsmen clays is that all the life is milled out of
them. If you can buy Plainsmen wet clays you ought to be able to buy the
ingredients that they use dry. Try blending them with a fireclay, and
some grog blended to inlude a wide range of sizes. If the clay is not as
dark as your redart body blend in a few percent of cheap red iron oxide.
Be sure to blend the iron in well. You might want to drill it into your
water.
