Any info on Insulation Fire Brick sources in Illinois or Indiana
would be appreciated. Thank you. LB.

Does anyone know of a source for IFB's in Eastern PA? Not necessarily
new ones, I know I can buy them at DelVal Potters supply. I'm looking
for used, seconds, etc. I have plenty of hard bricks that I acquired
from the kilns of a local brickyard (in Quakertown, PA) that burned
down several years ago, but no IFB's. I would like to build a 20-25 ft
gas fired down draft kiln. Any advice would be appreciated.

Experience is what you get, when you don't get what you wanted.

Don - I take exception to "just needing a side etc.etc." Try building a
MFT with el-cheapo K23's made by a second rate mfg, or with dimensional
irregularities. I wish I had never tried...had to rebuild in 7 years.
Nils specifies the brand name of the bricks to be used for a reason, but
I went for the lower $ brand! Never again!!I

My tax refund is on the way, those education credits are great! Now I'm
looking for a source of IFB's to finally build my downdraft kiln!!! Does
anyone know of a source nearby. I live about 60 miles north of
Philadelphia. New or used???

To All,

I realize that this has probably been discussed a thousand times however
after reading Nils Lou's book "The Art of Firing" and having made the first
pass of reading Mel's book 21st Century Kilns I am starting to plan (as
directed in Chapter 1 of 21st Century Kilns) to build my own kiln.

Cost of course does figure in however I do not wish to scrimp on the
quality of materials.

Could people suggest reasonable suppliers of IFB?

If this has been listed far too frequently please feel free to shoot me an
email off list!

I hope all stay warm this evening.

Thanks in advance
Tom

Tom,
Don't know where you are located, but if you happen to be in the
Southeast there is a brick supplier in Atlanta that caters to the
needs of potters, Larkin Refractory Solutions. Jim Wunch at Larkin has
given me a lot of help getting exactly what I need to build the kiln I
am constructing. You can find their contact info by Googling Larkin
Refractory.
